How long can I take ibuprofen for low back pain?

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) generally suitable for short-term relief of low back pain. For most people, it is safe to use for up to 10 days at the recommended dose.

The recommended dose of ibuprofen is generally one 200-milligram (mg) tablet three times a day as necessary for pain, with at least 4 hours between doses.

If necessary, a doctor may prescribe a higher dose of up to 600 mg to take four times a day. A person should not exceed 1,200 mg per day for over-the-counter use unless a doctor advises it.
